I’ve always had a miserable time making humbucker routing templates, they are never perfect like the cnc-made ones that you can buy. I know, I should just buy one of them, but I love a good challenge!
I figured out a new way to make them that is near-perfect, think Tetris or Jenga, watch the video to find out.
You can download a PDF of the humbucker routing cavity template here. (right click and Save-As)
Brilliant!
Thanks 🙂
Amazing. Such a simple idea and will give a totally accurate result.
Thank you – I have wasted too many hours doing this the wrong way. Cant wait to try this out.
Cheers,
Graham
You’re welcome. I understand your frustration 🙂 I went through the same thing…
One word comes to mind “Awesome” 🙂
Haha… thanks!
This is one of the most fantastic solutions I have seen.
I am an ex physics lab technician, and I really appreciate the simplicity with which this accurate template can be made and then adjusted, before gluing. I am going to use it to make a precision bass template. This is brilliant.
Thanks! It’s definitely much better than trying to make on free-hand.

Ingenious! I’ve been contemplating this very thing for a project I’m in the prep stages of. I have a homemade template, and the slots where the pickup “ears” go are bigger than necessary. Guitar building sure is frustrating, but still a lot of fun.
Thanks Ron. It’s definitely worth the time to make it.
Well done. So simple, yet accurate.
Thanks Drew!

I was looking for a routing template (without success) for an 8-string soapbar pickup when I came across your tutorial on you-tube. Great solution, many thanks!!!

Thanks, glad it’s helpful.

how deep do you need to plunge for a std humbucker?
